It didn’t matter what the Coupeville football team did with its offense during Friday night’s homecoming game, they were successful.

“We just came out, we knew we were going to win this game and that’s what we did,” senior quarterback Mike Bagby said.

Behind a slew of players, the Wolves amassed 466 yards of total offense and crushed Northwest A/B opponent Charles Wright in a battle for second place in league.

“Even when they brought a lot of people we were able to move the ball and just mix it up passing and throwing,” head coach Ron Bagby said.

Coupeville, which jumped out to a 29-6 halftime lead, got on the scoreboard first via a big play from junior Casey Larson.

After getting stopped on their first two offensive series and forced back to their own 6-yard line to start the third series, Larson quickly changed the tempo of the game.

Taking a handoff up the middle, the fullback broke free down the right sideline for a 94-yard score.

“Our first couple of series they just stopped us,” coach Bagby said. “We didn’t panic, we knew we’d find something.”

Larson’s spark opened the floodgates for the Wolves.

Senior running back J.J. Marti tacked on two first-half touchdown runs and junior Trevor Tucker took a swing pass from Mike Bagby 44-yards for another score.

The Terriers’ only first-half points came right before halftime when a speedy Jordan Bridges returned a kickoff 82-yards for a touchdown.

Things didn’t go as smoothly for the Wolves’ offense in the second half as they turned the ball over four times on five fumbles.

A solid defensive effort, however, helped Coupeville never get in danger of losing its lead. Highlights included two consecutive sacks from junior Brian Folkestad and interceptions from Smith and Bagby. The Wolves also forced the Terriers to punt on their first five possessions.

“When we can make mistakes like that and still win — that shows what our defense is doing right now,” Mike Bagby said.

Offensively, CHS tacked on two more touchdowns in the second half on a 1-yard run from Mike Bagby and a 12-yard touchdown pass from Bagby to sophomore James Smith.

Bagby ended the night completing 10-of-20 passes for 137 yards and two TDs. Larson led the team in rushing with 155 yards on eight carries, while Marti had 75 yards on 16 carries. Tucker added 164 all-purpose yards (86 rushing and 78 receiving).

The Wolves are now 3-1 in league and 4-3 overall. The victory moved them into a tie with LaConner for second place.

First-place Friday Harbor (4-0, 7-0) owns a tiebreaker over both schools and continues to dominate, defeating league opponents by an average of 48 points.

With the Wolverines likely to take the Northwest A title, second place is where sights are set for CHS now.

“We control our own destiny,” coach Bagby said. “If we win these next three games we’re the number two team and we get a playoff berth.”

The last time the Wolves played in the post season was in 1998.

“Boy, it’s been a long time, a long time…,” coach Bagby said.

Coupeville travels to Darrington (0-3, 1-5) Friday, Oct. 21. The Wolves then close out the season, Friday, Oct. 28 on the road at Cedar Park Christian and play at home, Thursday, Nov. 3 against LaConner in a game that could decide second place in the Northwest A.

“We’re not talking about playoffs yet, we’re taking it one game at a time,” coach Bagby sad. “Obviously that’s our goal, but we know that we’ve got to do it one game at a time.”
