Looking for a local, outdoor event to take advantage of the sunny spring temperatures this weekend?

Oak Harbor’s Holland Happening, the 40th annual three-day celebration of the city’s unique Dutch heritage, continues today and Sunday, April 26.

Thursday night, residents were given a preview of the spring carnival spread along Bayshore Drive.

After stepping off a spin-out style ride, sisters Catherine, 10, and 9-year-old Tammie Hager were already picking the next ride: the Moonraker.

“That was awesome,” Catherine said. “We go on that every year.”

Guilty food pleasures such as hand-dipped corn dogs and monster burgers were on-hand, along with classic carnival rides and games. Carnival tickets are available for $25 at the gate.

Last night, the big events were the annual Dutch Dinner at the First Reformed Church and the art stroll at the SVC Whidbey Campus.

This morning, Dutch families are invited to walk in the Holland Happening parade beginning at 11 a.m., with line-up at 10 a.m.

This year’s parade has a record number of grand marshals, who are the original founders of the event. The parade will also pay special tribute to local, pioneering Dutch families.

Today and tomorrow, visitors can check out wood shoe carving demonstrations from noon to 4 p.m. and from 11:30 to 6 p.m. each day and enjoy a variety of entertainment downtown. The Oak Harbor Lions will serve up a barbecue of wild-caught salmon from 11:30 to 6 p.m. both days. The celebration culminates Sunday with the popular Klompen Canal Races.
