Thursday night will not soon be forgotten by Coupeville soccer enthusiasts.

For the first time ever in CHS athletics the boys soccer team gathered a win, beating Snohomish County Christian 5-2 at Mickey Clark Field.

“It’s fun to be a part of something that’s never happened before, junior midfielder Micah Einterz said. “To know you’ll be known as the first soccer team is pretty cool.”

Eager to get a win in the books, the Wolves didn’t waste any time taking care of business. CHS applied constant pressure throughout the first half, out-shooting the Lions 13-4.

Coupeville took its first lead in the 20th minute when forward Garrit Manker received a crossed ball from Greg Mottet. Manker took a ricochet off a SCC player and booted the ball in the net with ease.

Just five minutes later, forward Matt Scott scored on a similar play from the wing.

Jon Chittim tacked on yet another goal on a crossed ball two minutes later for a 3-0 halftime lead.

“We worked on getting it out to the wings and crossing it to the box in practice and that’s what we did,” midfielder Jack Armstrong said.

It was much of the same in the second half, as Coupeville again out-shot their opponents 12-5.

Mottet opened up the second frame with a goal two minutes in. The Lions countered eight minutes later, with an Everette Adams goal off a corner kick.

Armstrong, however, put an end to any SCC hopes for a comeback, nailing a shot that sent the crowd into a frenzy. In the 60th minute he launched a ball from over 40 yards out that sailed just between the Lion goalkeeper’s outstretched arm and the cross bar.

“I was just trying to get it in the box so somebody could get a head on it,” Armstrong said.

Head coach Melissa Martenak was pleased with what she saw from the Wolves, in particular getting five goals from five different players.

“That’s what it’s all about,” she said. “It’s not just about one player — it’s about teamwork.”

Shoreline ch 3, Coupeville 2

The Coupeville boys were close to winning their first game in their first attempt on Tuesday night, but fell, 3-2, in double overtime to Shoreline Christian.

“The first half the kids were really nervous, but after that they were fine,” Martenak said.

Einterz and Mottet had a goal apiece for the Wolves, who are now 1-1 in league play.

Coupeville plays its next home game at 6 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 21 against Mount Vernon Christian.
