High school opens up to parents

Oak Harbor High School hosts open house.

“In an attempt to build stronger ties between local schools and parents, Oak Harbor High School will hold a special open house Oct. 12. It’s a chance for parents to explore the high school campus, get valuable information, visit their child’s classrooms and talk with teachers, said Rob Prosh, an assistant principal at the high school. It’s a prelude to parent/teacher conferences which will happen next month. Though such conferences are common at the lower grades, Prosh said he believes this will be the first time the high school has offered them. This year, the Oak Harbor School District is placing special emphasis on improving communication, cooperation and partnerships with families. Parents are often more involved with school during the elementary years and into middle school but many tend to back away when their kids get to high school. However, Prosh said studies have shown that high school students actually like to see their parents involved on some level. Other studies show that, on average, students with involved parents tend to do better in the classroom.Next Thursday’s open house is just a step in helping make the high school more inviting to parents and the community, said Prosh. In addition to classroom visits, parents attending the open house will receive packets of information on academics, committees and clubs and the high school PTA. The school’s Chamber Choir will also present a musical number. Cookies and coffee will be available. For more information call the high school at 279-5400.————–WHAT: Oak Harbor High School Open HouseWHERE: Parker HallWHEN: Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. “
