The 10th year of the Real Heroes Breakfast promises to be the best to date.
Sponsored by the Island County Chapter of the Red Cross, the event will be held Tuesday, March 4, at 7:30 a.m. in the Elks Lodge.
“This year’s Heroes is going to be outstanding,” said Barbara Johnson, Red Cross executive director.
Bob Severns of the Chicago Title Island County Division will emcee the event and Jim Riney will lend his audio-visual expertise.
“Jim filmed each award recipient for a five-to-seven minute clip,” Johnson said. “And he put together a special video honoring the six EOD-MU11 members who were killed in action. That’s going to be very touching.”
The seven heroes who will be honored are HM1 Seth Von Bortstel and AW1 Chad Lewis, Military Awards; Cathy Caryl, Humanitarian Award; Island County Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Scott, Police Officer Award; Corey Johnson, Volunteer Service Award; Alana Miller, Youth Good Samaritan Award; and Hattie Schweitzer, Emergency Service Award.
Johnson, now in her third year coordinating the event, has crested the learning curve and is confident the breakfast will be a smashing success.
“This one is going to be the best of the best,” she said.
