Greenbank man accused of raping unconscious woman

A 36-year-old Greenbank man is in jail after he was allegedly caught raping an unconscious woman at his home April 26, according to court documents.

Joshua R. Wood appeared in Island County Superior Court Friday. Judge Vickie Churchill found probable cause existed to believe he committed the crime of rape in the second degree.

She set Wood’s bail at $150,000.

A detective with the Island County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a report about the case that Wood, his roommate and a few friends were playing croquet at a get-together. A witness said Wood knew that a 27-year-old woman had taken Xanax but kept “feeding” her more and more alcohol throughout the day, the detective’s report states.

The woman’s sister and the roommate heard a strange noise, opened the door to Wood’s bedroom and discovered him having sex with the “lifeless” and naked woman, the report states.

The victim’s head was back, her eyes were closed and she was not reacting at all, the detective wrote.

“He said the scene was appalling,” the detective wrote, referring to the roommate.

The victim’s sister started screaming and Wood got up and tried unsuccessfully to shut the door.

Wood grabbed the screaming woman by the face and shoved her backward, the report states.

When he tried to assault the woman again, the roommate swung at him and missed, hitting the wall and breaking his arm, according to the report.
