Three defensive stops in the last minute and a big three-point bucket by Kendra O’Keefe carried the Coupeville girls basketball team to a 42-41 win at Sultan Thursday, Jan. 13.

The win broke a nine-game losing streak for the Wolves (1-5, 2-9) who hadn’t won since the season opener Nov. 30. Tonight, Jan. 14, Coupeville entertains Lakewood (2-4, 3-9) at 7 p.m. Cedarcrest (3-2, 6-4) comes to Coupeville Tuesday, Jan. 18.

The Sultan game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed because of the threat of snow. The Coupeville-Sultan boys game was also postponed and will be played tomorrow, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. in Coupeville.

O’Keefe’s hoop with 12 seconds left provided the winning points and lifted the Wolves to their first Cascade Conference win.

The Turks had the ball with less than a minute to go and up 41-39. The Wolves came up with a crucial stop and called time out to set up O’Keefe’s shot.

After O’Keefe put Coupeville in the lead, the Wolves’ defense held again. The Turks were forced to foul. The free throw was missed, and for a third time in the final seconds Coupeville blanked Sultan to secure the win.

Coupeville coach Jackie Bykonen said, “Things finally came together; we kept our composure.”

She noted that everyone contributed “at both ends of the floor.”

Bykonen called on Jai’Lysa Hoskins to stop Sultan’s Brandi Johnson in the fourth quarter and Hoskins delivered. Hoskins also “grabbed quite a few boards,” Bykonen said.

Amanda Manker chipped in with three blocks and Cassidi Rosenkrance had “some steals and limited her turnovers” for “a solid game at both ends,” according to Bykonen.

O’Keefe, with three three-pointers, finished with 15 points, Bessie Walstad eight, Rosenkrance six, Taya Boonstra four, Katie Smith four, Courtney Arnold three and Hoskins two.
