Out of a dozen  entries in the annual Gingerbread Challenge, one family’s creation wowed voters and judges. The Jungman family’s gingerbread replica of the Coupeville Wharf earned them the People’s Choice award after receiving nearly half of the more than 330 votes cast in the competition. Glenda Wright won the adult category with her Coconut Dream House creation and Jackie Contreras won the youth award for her Police Box gingerbread house. Each winning entry receives a prize donated by businesses in the community, including the Honey Bear, Midway Florist and The Crow’s Nest. Winners were announced Sunday at the Red Ticket Drawing. Each year the Gingerbread Workshop is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving and many entries are entered from those creations. The Gingerbread Workshop and Challenge is sponsored by The Whidbey Examiner, Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association and the Friends of the Coupeville Library.
