Giant Pumpkins: First place gourd weighs in at nearly 1,000 pounds

Pumpkins and zucchini were weighed in a driving rain storm Saturday during the annual Giant Pumpkin Contest, but hardy souls stood by until the winners were announced.

Pumpkins and zucchini were weighed in a driving rain storm Saturday during the annual Giant Pumpkin Contest, but hardy souls stood by until the winners were announced.

The biggest zucchini was a 21 pound, 12 ounce beast grown by John Burks of Coupeville. Second place was grown by Peter Case-Smith of Oak Harbor, coming in at 16 pounds, 9 ounces. Ramona Deighton, also of Oak Harbor, was third with her 12 pound, 15 ounce zuke.

The Junior Division of the Giant Pumpkin contest was won by Kohl Baker of Freeland, for the second year in a row. He set a new personal record with 287 pounds.

The Giant Pumpkin contest winners were Mike Radach of Oak Harbor with 297 pounds. Second place was taken by Neal Amtmann of Coupeville with 486 pounds. Lee Roof of Coupeville, who grew his entry at a property near Oak Harbor, won at 976 pounds. For free giant pumpkin seeds for next year, email whidbeypumpkins@gmail.com
