Friday Harbor blows past Coupeville

Facing the number-three team in the state on its home field is never an easy task.

Facing the number-three team in the state on its home field is never an easy task.

Add the distraction of not having football pads until five minutes before kickoff and things certainly don’t get any easier on the visiting team.

Unfortunately for the Coupeville Wolves, they ran into this unusual dilemma Friday night when their gear missed the ferry to Friday Harbor.

“We were on our heels from the time we got off the bus,” CHS head coach Ron Bagby said.

A prepared Friday Harbor team wasted no time taking advantage of the flustered Wolves, moving out to a big halftime lead, before winning 42-7.

“They just jumped right on us,” Bagby said. “It was just bang, bang, bang.”

The Wolverines scored five times in the first half on 23-yard, 10-yard and 5-yard pass plays and rushes of 31 and 83 yards. They added one more touchdown run of 35 yards in the third quarter.

Coupeville tacked on its first and only score of the game with 4:46 to go in the game, when quarterback Mike Bagby connected with tight end Andrew Moon for a 70-yard touchdown pass.

Bagby ended the game 17-for-33 passing for 211 yards. Moon had three catches for 88 yards.

The Wolves struggled to get their running game moving, carrying the ball five times for 31 yards.

Defensive lineman Danny Graham led Coupeville defensively with seven unassisted tackles.

The Wolves (0-2, 1-4) host another ranked team in Orcas Island at 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8. The Vikings are ranked sixth in class B football in the latest Seattle Times poll.

“They throw the ball real well and they’ve got a really good line,” coach Bagby said.
