Monday night, Coupeville resident Ruben Barajasmares, 43, was driving a 2004 Nissan pickup east on Ault Field Drive when the car spun out of control and struck a telephone pole near the intersection with Summit Boulevard, according to a State Patrol report.

Passengers Juan Barajasmares, 26, and Lorenzo Jiemenez, 54, were both injured and transported to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment. They are both Oak Harbor residents.

The driver and another passenger, Francisco Chavezrodriguez, 26, of Coupeville, were not injured.

The State Patrol reported that the cause of the accident is suspected to be “driving under the influence” and that Ruben Barajasmares was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault.

The pickup was totaled.

At about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, in a separate accident, a two-car, head-on collision occurred on Highway 20 near the intersection at Fakkema Road.

The State Patrol reported that Stephanie Selby, 25, of Oak Harbor was driving a 2009 Jeep Wrangler south on the highway and crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane of traffic.

Selby’s Jeep struck a northbound 2006 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 26-year-old Rochelle Ward, of Oak Harbor.

Ward was seriously injured and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

Selby was also injured and transported to Whidbey General Hospital.

The State Patrol reported that drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the accident and that possible charges are pending.

Both vehicles were totaled.
