Port of South Whidbey Executive Director Stan Reeves has resigned from his role, and a familiar face may be taking his place.

Reeves, who has served in the top position since 2018, announced his resignation last week. He has accepted a job with the Department of the Navy as a civilian employee at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. His last day with the port is May 12.

During a special meeting on Friday, the port’s board of commissioners convened to discuss hiring an interim executive director. Commissioner Jack Ng said he had spoken with Angi Mozer – Reeves’ predecessor who served as the port’s executive director from 2014 to 2018 – about filling the role.

The board agreed on the importance of hiring an interim executive director.

“We certainly need an interim director so that we can catch some overlap with Stan and so we have a good transition,” Commissioner Greg Easton said.

Mozer, who was present on the video call, said she would be willing to fill the interim position on a full-time basis. She added that it would be preferable if she could work from home a couple days out of the week.

Reeves pointed out that Mozer is familiar with some of the port’s larger projects, since she currently serves as a consultant. She left the job of executive director in 2018 because of her husband’s military transfer to Australia. She now lives in Anacortes.

Easton took things one step further, asking Mozer if she was interested in becoming the port’s next executive director.

“I am willing, but I want to make sure that the port’s comfortable with my location and that I can fulfill the position adequately,” she responded.

Easton suggested she could start out in the interim role, and then things could become more permanent if it worked for everyone. The commissioners agreed to forgo advertising for an executive director at this point.

“I’m going to go along with Greg,” Commissioner Curt Gordon said. “Let’s just wait and see how this goes.”

Mozer will start as interim executive director on April 18. If she is hired as the executive director, details will need to be worked out regarding her compensation. Reeves currently receives an annual salary of $82,910.

Reeves told the commissioners that there are a few things he intends to tie up before he leaves, including the presentation of a new public records policy.
