The public saw schematics and conceptual drawings of the new Oak Harbor High School football stadium Monday night.

The stadium will be built on the high school campus where the current track is located. It will feature an artificial surface complete with an “OH” at the 50-yard line.

Chris Lilly, architect for McGranahan Architects, the firm hired to design the stadium, said that location selected is best because it will stay out of the way of the high school renovation project. Spectators can park at nearby Hillcrest Elementary School to attend big games.

The aluminum grandstand will be covered and seat 2,500 people. A press box sits atop the bleachers, while a concession stand and locker rooms sit underneath. The boys and girls locker rooms can be partitioned, which increases the number of locker rooms to four.

The main entrance to the stadium will be located on the south end of the complex. It will have two ticket booths and a plaza large enough for 200 people. While people enter the stadium through the ticket booths, they can exit from both ends for easier access to off-campus parking.

The new facility will also have a track similar to the one installed at North Whidbey Middle School and room for field events located at the far end of the grand stand.

“This will be a premier throwing location,” said Bob Smithson, athletic director for the Oak Harbor School District.

He added that the quality of the new stadium could make Oak Harbor an appealing location for district playoff games and tournaments.
