Undefeated Lake Stevens defeated the Oak Harbor boys basketball team 79-58 in the Wildcats’ gym Friday.

Oak Harbor jumped to a 6-2 lead, then the Vikings went on a 20-5 run to take control of the game.

Lake Stevens (5-0, 6-0) wasn’t flashy; it simply played solid, efficient fundamental basketball to put away the Wildcats. A pesky press, a tough man-to-man half-court defense and an aggressive rebounding effort kept the Oak Harbor offense under control. Offensively the Vikings ran the court when the opportunities were present and used an efficient half-court game when they weren’t. Their offense perked the most when Shane Kaska was on the court.

Kaska, who was all-league last year, put up 33 points even though he sat in long stretches because of foul trouble. When he was on the bench, Oak Harbor held its own and often cut into the Viking lead.

Mike Washington Jr. scored 18 points with a strong finish. He started the game with a cold hand but got his teammates involved with a half-dozen assists.

Post Colby Anter added 12 points, some of put-backs, others off nice feeds from his teammates.

Stevie Bratt scored five; Trace Paul, Rashaad Smith and Denzel Harden had four each; and Aaron Boesch, Jay Stout and Ryan Fakkema scored three apiece.

The Wildcats (0-4, 1-6) play a nonleague game at Coupeville (4-1) Monday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m.
