Organizers of Oak Harbor’s 2002 Old Fashioned 4th of July fireworks extravaganza say it will be the biggest and best fireworks display the city has ever seen, even though the doughnut train has derailed.
“The spectacular aerial event will be choreographed to emotionally-elevating, foot-tapping and flag-waving patriotic music,” said Priscilla Heistad, chamber of commerce manager.
Oak Harbor’s Old Fashioned 4th of July has always been sincere due to the community’s close affiliation with NAS Whidbey Island. “Our community knows more personally the sacrifices that each military member and his or her family makes,” Heistad said.
This year, the chamber set a goal to raise the $10,000 to put on this show by selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts to businesses and residents of Oak Harbor.
Through the public’s support $6,499 was raised in the two fund-raising dates. However, the chamber still needs to raise another $3,500 to pay for the fireworks show.
Heistad said Krispy Kreme is no longer allowing fund-raisers that have not been previously advertised north of Arlington. They are citing “quality issues” for their decision, she said.
That means that the chamber needs to raise the balance of the funds through private donors or sponsorships.
Anyone may make a contribution to the chamber at 32630 Highway 20, Oak Harbor, or call 675-3755. All funds raised will only be used for fireworks.
