Barney had an interesting adventure when he went for a walk with Central Whidbey resident Carolyn Brettmann.

The friendly, energetic golden retriever got trapped at the bottom of a ravine Thursday morning and it took several firefighters from Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue to free him.

“He saw a rabbit and jerked the leash out of my hand,” Brettmann said while playing with Barney. She said Barney chased after the rabbit and scurried down the ravine off Driftwood Way in Ledgewood where he got stuck.

She tried to go down the ravine, and then walked down the beach to try and reach the dog from below. Finally she decided to call firefighters to come and free Barney. The pooch was trapped in the ravine for about an hour.

“It was better for us to get him than for you,” Hartin told Brettmann. In addition to Hartin, two firefighters and one engine responded.

It turned out Barney had gotten his leash stuck and he had wrapped it around the tree several times. Barney was a little wet but was otherwise in good spirits.

“I don’t know what I would have done without him,” a grateful Brettmann said.
