Fire destroys recreational vehicle, Rolling Hills shop

Firefighters put out a blaze on North Whidbey Tuesday that took out a recreational vehicle and shop behind a home.

A plume of black smoke from the fire in the Rolling Hills neighborhood could be seen from as far away as Coupeville.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

A neighbor first noticed that the RV was on fire and called it in at about 1:30 p.m.

The resident of the house wasn’t there at the time. The RV was fully involved in flames by the time firefighters arrived and the fire was moving into the adjacent shop, said Battalion Chief Chris Swiger with North Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

Swiger said he notified Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue and the fire department from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island because he wanted to make sure enough firefighters arrived at the scene.

He said it can be a challenge to get enough people in the largely volunteer department to respond when everyone’s at work.

A total of 18 people from the three departments responded to the busy scene.

Firefighters were able to get the conflagration under control in a relatively speedy 28 minutes, Swinger said.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 4:05 p.m.

Swinger estimated that the blaze caused about $50,000 of damage to the RV, which was destroyed, and the shop, which is likely a total loss.

The fire probably started in the RV, Swiger said.

The cause is undetermined, but foul play is not suspected, according to officials.
