With the holidays approaching, I get questioned on what do you get for the outdoorsman that has everything.

First off, there is no way that the person has everything. Just pick up a Cabela’s or Bass Pro catalog and you will see hundreds of ideas for a holiday gift, but here are a few that are sure to bring a smile to any angler or hunter.

If your special someone is an angler, then take a look at getting them some new line for their reels. Too many anglers use their line year after year, and then have a few choice words when the big one they have been after snaps the old, frayed stuff. There are two ways of going about this. You can either remove the spools and take them to Ace or Holiday Sports where they will reload them with brand new line, or you can purchase spools of different styles of test poundage.

There is no way that any angler has enough lures. Every trout angler can use some spinners and no self-respecting bass angler will tell you they have enough tube jigs, crankbaits or spinnerbaits. Again, just talk with the guys in any sporting goods department and they can lead you in the right direction.

A new rod and reel would always be a welcome gift. Another great idea would be to give your favorite angler a guided fishing trip. Whether you book a guide for a mountain stream trout trip, or for big halibut or salmon on the coast, this will be a gift that will be remembered well after the holidays are over.

A very forward-looking gift would be to stock up your angler’s tackle box with pink. The upcoming year is an odd-numbered year, so there should be another good run of pink salmon. Now you may think I’m nuts to be talking about something that is months away, but an ample supply of pink Buzz Bombs now will be well appreciated when the shelves are bare this summer.

Lastly, there isn’t an angler around that can’t use a new tackle box. Like the auto manufacturers in Detroit, there seems to be new models every year and each has features that we just have to have. You can never have enough drawers for your lures.

Now if you are shopping for an avid hunter, then try some of these ideas. No matter what they are after there are calls to be had and no hunter ever has enough of them.

Turkey season will be approaching shortly and there is always room for another slate, friction or diaphragm call. Waterfowl hunters are notorious for having numerous calls dangling from their neck in the blind, so one more can never hurt. Even big game hunters are using more calls, so even if they only hunt deer and/or elk, there is a call that can be useful.

Now most hunters will tell you that you cannot ever, ever, have enough camo. Seems like there is a pattern to hide you no matter where in the world you hunt. Used to be that old BDU’s were all you need. How wrong we were, of course you need a separate pattern for hunting deer in Spokane, plus a different one for hunting elk in Yakima, and there is no way that they can be used for hunting bear near Index. Because of this, you can always find a piece of clothing in a certain pattern that is a needed must.

If your hunter uses a bow, arrows are always welcome. Just take a look at one of their old ones and any archery shop can match these to a new set. Replacing old aluminum shafts with carbon or graphite would be a welcome gift.

Good optics are always a nice treat, and one of the new multi-tools from companies like Gerber, Leatherman and Buck can always be used by any hunter. Your hunter probably has numerous weapons, but can always use a new firearm. Not to mention, if the old one is then for sale, give me a call.

If you still can’t decide, then try a gift certificate from one of the major outdoor retailers.

Another idea is purchasing a 2003 hunting/fishing license. They are on sale now and will be a thoughtful idea for the next upcoming year.
