Filing weeks kicks off with entries for council, school board

There were a couple of surprises on the first day of candidate filings on Whidbey Island.

Bill Larsen, a former Port of Coupeville commissioner, filed to run for position 7 on the Oak Harbor City Council. The position is currently held by Danny Paggao, longtime councilman and mayor pro tem, who is retiring.

Council members Joel Servatius and Erica Wasinger also filed for the seats they currently hold, as they said they would.

Tuesday morning, real estate agent Jim Woessner filed for the seat currently held by Jim Campbell, who also said he isn’t running.

Oak Harbor school board will see some new faces. Two candidates filed for the seat being vacated by Corey Johnson. They are Cory Glach, vice president of the Oak Harbor Elementary PTA, and John Diamond.

Erik Mann, a real estate agent, filed for the other open position.

Ana Maria Schlecht, who was appointed to the position, announced she isn’t running for the seat.

There will be a competition for at least one of the two open seats on the North Whidbey Fire and Rescue board. Incumbent Larry Wall and former commissioner T.J. Lamont filed for position one. Former fire chief Marv Koorn filed for the other position; he was appointed to the position last fall.

Wall, and T.J. Lamont, a former commissioner, both filed for the other open seat.

Pat Powell was the sole candidate for the Coupeville Town Council as of Monday evening.
