Fiery crash closes highway

One vehicle was destroyed, but no people were injured in a two-car crash near Oak Harbor early Wednesday morning.

North Whidbey Fire and Rescue interim Chief Chris Swiger said the department received the call about the accident at Highway 20 and Waterloo Road around 5:44 a.m. Jan. 4. The call had first mistakenly come in as an accident at Highway 20 and Swantown Road.

Swiger said he did not know the cause of the accident or how it happened. Both drivers had exited their vehicles by the time firefighters arrived, and neither was injured, but one vehicle had gone up in flames.

Burning gas was leaking from the vehicle, making it extremely difficult to extinguish, Swiger said. Firefighters attended to the blaze with water for half an hour before finally subduing it.

“It just didn’t want to go out,” he said.

The burning car was a total loss, but Swiger said the other vehicle suffered only minor damage in the back.

Highway 20 was closed for around an hour while firefighters responded to the incident.
