The Trust Board of Ebey’s Reserve is looking for volunteers to help preserve one of the oldest barns on Whidbey Island.

Protecting the Boyer barn, which was built in the 1860s and is located on Crockett Prairie, is the subject of the 2009 Preservation Field School Project, which is scheduled from July 20 through Aug. 13.

Volunteers will help stabilize the barn, split shakes, restore the hay and barn doors, install a new cedar shake roof and complete additional exterior envelop work.

The field school is a great way to learn about historic preservation, contribute to the community and have fun. The four-week field school will take place Mondays through Thursdays working four-hour shifts from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A field school kickoff is scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 16 at the Boyer barn, 711 Fort Casey Rd.

The Boyer barn retains a significant portion of its integrity as both the exterior and interior have changed little from its original construction. The nature and quality of the craftsmanship, construction details and evidence of the specific tools that were used are especially unique.
