I am appalled at the passive acceptance of the major construction projects announced in the legal notices in the May 17, 2005 issue of the Stanwood-Camano News. The following is an excerpt from this notice:

“… Island County has reviewed the proposed project for probable adverse environmental impacts and expects to issue a determination of non-significance (DNS) … Proposal calls for the establishment of two cultural centers (12,000 square feet total), two motels (10,000 square feet each and 40 rooms total), an office building (10,000 square feet), a store, office and restaurant (9,200 square feet)

The expected determination of “no significance” means there will be no environmental impact statement, nor any public hearings o allow Camano residents to express their approval or disapproval.

Not to mention is the soil condition of that area. I have heard ever since the restaurant opened at that site that it does not perc, which describes an impervious barrier that keeps rainwater and other water from reaching the aquifer. This recharging is necessary to prevent salt water intrusion or the drying up of shallow wells with disastrous results.

No significants! how about the increased traffic across the Mark Clark Bridge? Also, the excess drainage derived from massive development would possibly have negative effect on the homes down hill. The entire situation requires community participation in all decisions.

Currently, the nearby town of Stanwood has no motels or hotels. Camano Island, on the other hand, has first-class bed-and-breakfast accommodations in several locations.
