If Mr. or Mrs. Strowbridge (Letters, May 14, “Communism alive in Island Countyâ€) had any idea of the environmental destruction the communist system caused they would understand the puzzlement of accusing an environmental group of being communist.
The communist system had no concern for land use or overuse, water pollution, air quality, or human safety (recall a place called Chernobyl).
That is where the befuddlement and failure to understand come from – the t-shirts are cute, require little thinking, and no concern for deeper, longer lasting issues.
Concern for the environment requires thinking about the distant future, looking further than your property line, understanding that we are each and all involved in accepting responsibility for taking care of the land we live on.
