In a letter to the editor from Mr. Bill Boylon (News-Times, Oct. 19) my position on the county budget cut that affects the 4-H program was misrepresented.

When this proposed cut was discussed at our Aug. 5 budget workshop, I voted against the cut that impacts 4-H and this was duly reported in your paper. This position and cuts to the senior services budget, animal control budget and others, all of which I voted against, are documented in the minutes of the commissioners’ meeting for that date. I would be happy to supply the Web address or a copy of those minutes to anyone who wishes to verify this information.

During my time in office I have acted to keep tight controls on county expenditures and property taxes with the result that Island County has the second lowest property tax rate in the state. However, I consider certain programs as my highest priorities including 4-H, senior services, the Sheriff’s office and public health. In my opinion, these are basic core services to be maintained at the highest levels possible.

The 4-H program represents an outstanding community program affecting many lives very positively and I will continue to support it with my best efforts. I regret that I was unable to prevail in our budget deliberations.
