Editor,
We read about the increase of the military and their families that are coming to Oak Harbor. As a community we welcome them.
Who is going to pay for the cost for new schools, classroom modules needed, over crowded classrooms, etc. mentioned in the articles? My concern is, where is the money for the schools coming from? We have read some money coming from federal government, but it is my understanding money allocated for schools in military towns goes into a general state fund and it is not necessarily passed directly to the communities that have the military school growth.
I think it is important for the federal government to pay for the increased expenses that a community incurs when the military and their families are moved to a community: schools, swimming pool, roads, fire and police services, hospital, parks, etc.
They are all affected cost wise with the increase of population. The homeowners’ property tax bills are already high … with half of the money mainly going to schools.
