Expect to see a little extra enthusiasm in the stands at Friday’s homecoming game against Stanwood.

Oak Harbor High School’s nationally-awarded cheerleaders will participate in Fan Frenzy Night, a national event organized to encourage community attendance at high school athletic events.

“We want a bunch of people to come out and give support and have a good time,” head cheerleading coach Pam Headridge said.

In order to display extra school spirit, the cheerleaders will hand out free flags to the first 200 students through the gate, while providing coupons for Arby’s and gift certificates to Zorba’s for the most energetic fans.

The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Harbor will also be in attendance, throwing candy into the crowd for those fans who show a little extra spirit.

According to the Fan Frenzy Web site, the key to a successful event is “crowd insanity.”

“Basically what we want to do is get the crowd all excited and into the game in order to support the athletes on the field and cheerleaders,” Headridge said.

The OHHS cheerleaders will take part in a number of other events leading up to the big game, including holding mini pep rallies and mini class competitions at school, decorating the town in balloons from the high school to the stadium and constructing a float for the annual Snake Dance.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., this coming Friday, Oct. 15 at Memorial Stadium.
