’Tis the season for silly scarecrows.

Celebrate autumn and the approach of Halloween and Thanksgiving by handcrafting a unique scarecrow at the Island County Fairgrounds in Langley. The second annual Scarecrow Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.

Cost is $10 per scarecrow plus at least one non-perishable food item for the Good Cheer barrel. All materials will be provided, along with instructions and certified scarecrow professionals to help create each masterpiece.

“We did it last year and will be back again this year. It was good, clean, family fun,” Ronni Long of Clinton posted on Facebook.

This family-friendly event will feature free hotdogs and hamburgers.

Visitors can build their own scarecrow on the grass at Fiddle Faddle Farm, take a tractor hayride around the fairgrounds or just enjoy the sunshine and commotion.

For those who don’t have time to build their own scarecrow, there will be some ready-made rural characters for sale.

Last year’s event sent 64 scarecrows to new homes and gardens throughout Whidbey Island.

This year, with the added support of Good Cheer’s cast-off clothing bonanza, the goal is to create at least 100.

Proceeds from this event will go to the Island County Fairground Association for maintenance and upkeep.
