The card tables at Bayside Lounge may soon open for play at Element Nightclub, if the Oak Harbor City Council approves Mike Kummerfeldt’s application for a card table license.

The council’s decision is the last in a string of hurdles he must clear in order to stick with the club’s business plan.

In December, Hearing Examiner Michael Bobbink approved Kummerfeldt’s application for a Conditional Use Permit, which allows for the use of card tables in the Element Nightclub.

The process, said Kummerfeldt, has taken about eight months to complete, and it has not been without a few bumps in the road, including a rash or noise complaints from Waterside condo residents who live across the street.

But changes to the interior and music selection were made in hopes of improving the club’s image.

If council approves the license, Kummerfeldt plans to operate two poker tables and six pit game tables at the Element, in hopes that the addition of card tables will attract a mix of customers, both young and old, and continue to improve the image of his club.

Over the past year, changes at Element included the addition of a sports bar, a change in music selection and an increase of insulation to keep the neighborhood quieter in the wee hours of the morning. They also held an open house for neighbors.

Oak Harbor City Council will meet Tuesday Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at 865 SE Barrington Dr., to consider the matter.
