Captain Applegate (Letters, Sept. 4) expressed my sentiments exactly. It delights me to see a young person like Eron Berg become involved in serving his community and expanding his interests further by running for the State House of Representatives in the 10th Congressional District.

Since I am one of the older retired individuals, I feel entitled to criticize my peers who, as Captain Applegate stated, “seek election to an office to give them something to do in their retirement.” It is my opinion that we older retired folks should indeed be in politics and be concerned about our government. This can be accomplished by acting as mentors and consultants to our young people who seek office.

Consider our U.S. Senators and members of the House of Representatives and the old “hangers-on,” some of whom literally sleep through sessions — if they attend at all. They should resign gracefully and allow our young, energetic folks to fill their offices.
