EDITORIAL: Yes, Yes for library

Oak Harbor and surrounding environs can do something nice for itself by casting two yes votes for the new Oak Harbor Regional Library.

Oak Harbor and surrounding environs can do something nice for itself by casting two yes votes for the new Oak Harbor Regional Library.

The first ballot question asks for the creation of a Public Capital Facility Area to coincide with the school district boundaries. The second question asks the people within that district to approve $12 million in general obligation bonds to pay for a new downtown library, to be retired over 20 years. The cost per thousand is estimated at 34 cents.

There is no doubt that the present Oak Harbor Library is far too small to handle existing patrons, not to mention the growth that will occur over the next 20 years. A larger, modernized library with sufficient parking is one of North Whidbey’s top priorities.

The downtown site chosen after months of study and consultation isn’t the cheapest site available, but it’s the best. The location along Pioneer Way will be easy to access for both motorists and pedestrians. The library will be an outstanding place to learn or simply read while enjoying the view, and as a side benefit, it will give a badly-needed boost to the downtown area.

This is’t a crucial vote, such as those for improved schools. But it’s a chance for North Whidbey residents to do something nice for themselves and future generations at a reasonable cost. A “yes, yes” vote will show we care about our fellow citizens and our town, and that we want to see it grow and prosper in future years.
