Linda Riffe lists a number of accomplishments in her campaign literature, but what she does not specifically say is that she’s restored public confidence in the office of Island County Treasurer. And that is by far her greatest contribution after four years in office.
When Riffe was elected for the first time in 2002, the office was in chaos, the frequent target of Washington State Auditor’s Office findings on how the public’s money was mismanaged. It was an embarrassing situation for county residents and beyond that there was no certainty public funds were being handled appropriately. Taxing districts didn’t always get all the money they had coming to them, as the office’s “internal controls†were substandard.
Riffe stepped into this mess, rolled up her sleeves and went to work. It wasn’t a situation that could be fixed over night, but she doggedly pursued her to-do list until the job was finished.
Today, the Island County Treasurer’s Office is no longer in hot water with the state auditor. In fact, it receives compliments for progress made. And Riffe has improved service to the public in a number of areas, from drop-off boxes for tax payments to clarifying tax statements and creating a helpful Web site. She has improved her staff, upgraded technology, and overseen a successful investment program.
A Democrat and former educator, Riffe has earned a solid “A†for her efforts and deserves to be re-elected by a large majority on Nov. 7.
