While his classmates got their diplomas and went on a cruise, one senior from Oak Harbor High School ended up instead in the back of a police car Monday night.

Capt. Rick Wallace with the Oak Harbor Police said an 18-year-old man who “threw, spread or touched” a school official or another person with dog feces was arrested just prior to the graduation ceremony on suspicion of fourth-degree assault.

The incident was handled quickly and quietly by police and school officials, so few people at the graduation were probably even aware of the poop-related incident.

Wallace said investigators are getting “to the bottom” of the story, but there is a chance the high school senior could face other possible charges. If the suspected dog feces turns out to be human feces, he said the young man could even face felony level charges.

In addition, Wallace said “additional arrests are likely” in the case. He said police believe the senior was paid by other graduating students to target a particular person with the dog excrement during the ceremony.

“We’re not sure,” Wallace said, “if it was a vendetta, a prank or just plain stupidity.”
