District seeks volunteers for orca recovery

The Whidbey Island Conservation District is seeking volunteers to help plant rain gardens.

The Whidbey Island Conservation District is seeking volunteers to help plant rain gardens at two island locations in celebration of Orca Recovery Day.

Oct. 15, conservation districts and other organizations all around the Puget Sound will host volunteer and education events to teach area residents how they can help protect the critically endangers southern resident orca population.

On Whidbey, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Coupeville Library and from noon to 2 p.m. at Greenbank Farm, volunteers can help plant rain gardens, which provide food for pollinators and help manage stormwater, making it safer for orcas and the salmon that they eat.

Whidbey residents can register for these and myriad other volunteer and education events taking place on the island at whidbeycd.org/events.
