Despite mishaps, community Thanksgiving meal a success

Neither an attempted coat snatching nor a mashed potato incident could dampen the gluttonous spirit of Coupeville diners at its annual Community Potluck Thursday.

Neither an attempted coat snatching nor a mashed potato incident could dampen the gluttonous spirit of Coupeville diners at its annual Community Potluck Thursday.

Per tradition, this year’s 16th annual Thanksgiving Day event drew approximately 200 people who enjoyed food, friends and a touch of drama, according to volunteer Sandey Brandon.

Around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Marshall Rick Norrie responded to a call about a woman, presumed homeless, who had attempted to steal someone’s coat, according to Brandon.

-Brandon said the issue was quickly resolved.

The dinner also experienced its annual “mashed potato incident” when someone brought 16 pounds of it a little too late, providing plenty of leftovers, according to Brandon.

She said the potluck element of it always lends itself to having too much or too little of something.

Still, “we had plenty of food and plenty of smiling faces,” Brandon said.

Adding a festive element to the dinner, planners added sparkling cider for visitors to enjoy this year with the 13 turkeys and eight hams served with all the fixings.

And despite the loss of their volunteer dishwasher 15 years, the community responded with the necessary manpower.

“It’s the volunteer spirit from the community that makes it happen,” Brandon said.

“It’s a great holiday tradition and people came and enjoyed themselves.”
