Deputy Dan Todd was recognized Monday morning for his successful effort to save the life of a suicidal man last November.

He was presented with the Life Saving Medal during the July 13 Board of Island County Commissioners meeting.

Sheriff Mark Brown described the November incident that occurred in the Coupeville area. He said ICOM received a call from a woman saying her former spouse was on the phone saying he was going to commit suicide. She said she heard engine noise in the background.

The woman provided the man’s location and Deputy Todd responded to the man’s home. Todd eventually peered through a window into the garage and noticed a vehicle running with an unconscious man inside. Todd entered the garage, opened the window and the garage door and dragged the man outside. Paramedics arrived and the man was transported to the hospital where he recovered.

Brown said the incident could have ended badly. “Here’s something that happened that went right,” he told the commissioners.
