Deception Pass to refurbish ampitheater benches

Deception Pass State Park has plans to refurbish its ampitheater benches.

Deception Pass State Park has plans to refurbish its ampitheater benches, and visitors who donate to the project can have their name put on a bench.

The North Beach Amphitheater’s 32 benches were built as a volunteer project by Eagle Scout Nathan Wagner in 2012. For the last 10 years, visitors have used those benches while enjoying arts events and interpretive programs put on at the ampitheater. The amphitheater hosts around 8,500 visitors annually.

“These programs have steadily increased in popularity, and the amphitheater area, which is meant to seat 250 comfortably, is often far over capacity,” Park Manager Jason Armstrong said.

The benches are now a decade old and ready for a face-lift. The refurbished amphitheater benches will have backrests to increase comfort for visitors who sit for long periods during park events.

“With the park’s 100th birthday approaching, we want to celebrate the last hundred years by revitalizing the park for the next hundred years,” said Jared Bessett, the Deception Pass Park Foundation program manager. “You could quite literally have your name attached to a piece of Washington’s most popular state park.”

Donors will have a custom plaque installed on a bench featuring their name, their business or even their favorite quote.
