Deception Pass picnic planned

A series of 100th anniversary festivities that took place this year will culminate in a community picnic reminiscent of decades past on July 23.

The park’s Cranberry Lake became a central community hub in the 1920s. A rectangular swimming dock, bath houses and a concession stand that has since burned down were all features that brought the public together on the lake’s shore, Armstrong said.

In the spirit of those early gatherings, the park will host a weekend-long free event “which is intended to recreate that experience from the 1920s,” Armstrong said. Food trucks, vendors, live music, a beer garden, a vintage RV rally and a vintage car show will all be features of the picnic.
