A family day trip to Deception Pass bridge ended at Island Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

In an attempt to give a large, northbound truck more room, 20-year-old Austin Elliot of Oak Harbor veered too far to the right while driving southbound on Deception Pass Bridge, according to Trooper Norm Larsen of the Washington State Patrol.

Elliot inadvertently clipped the concrete curb at about 1:30 p.m. with his white Chrysler LeBaron GT, sending concrete flying in the direction of a 10-year-old boy, said North Whidbey Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Lyle Zimmerman.

The debris struck the boy’s leg and caused several half-inch lacerations. The victim, whose name was not immediately available, was transported to Island Hospital in Anacortes, Zimmerman said.

Elliot was not injured, but his run-in with the curb resulted in a flat tire.

The incident slowed traffic in both directions for about 20 minutes.
