Dalton delivers

You can't keep a good cookie lady down

“Neither rain, nor snow, nor power outage, nor surgery stays Jackie Dalton from the swift completion of her appointed rounds.Every year about this time Dalton, a longtime Oak harbor resident, makes a special delivery of cookies and other holiday treats to the staff of the Oak Harbor Post Office. Her timing this year, as usual, was perfect since this is one of the busiest weeks of the year for postal employees. When she arrived Monday morning with her annual goodies there was a long line of people waiting to send off their holiday packages. In the back, postal workers scurried intently among carts piled higher than two Jackie Daltons, while she maneuvered her way to a table with trays of treats, still hidden from anxious eyes by a layer of aluminum foil. They deserve this, Dalton said. It will give them lots of energy, especially the fudge.Besides fudge, there were plates full of chocolate chip cookies, brownies, party mix and a new Dalton cookie creation featuring applesauce and raisins.I wish there could have been more, she lamented, even while pulling yet another treat tray from a cardboard box.The postal workers don’t see a problem. They are always bowled over by Dalton’s gift.Do you start on this at Halloween? asked Postmaster Mike Harvey as he surveyed the festive feast. This is at least the sixth year that Dalton has been delivering her homemade holli-delicacies. Even she can’t quite remember when it started and every year she thinks it may be the last – especially leading up to this year. Dalton has been suffering severe knee pain and is scheduled to undergo knee-replacement surgery in only a week or so.My doctor told me to stay off my leg but I guess I didn’t listen, she said. Postal clerk Launa Lindbeck said Dalton was so concerned that she might miss her annual delivery this year that she came in a week early to offer a pre-apology in case the goodies were late.We all love her, said Lindbeck. “
