Everybody will be keeping their shirts on at PW Murphy’s.

The owners of the downtown Oak Harbor restaurant and sports bar decided to cancel an “exotic striptease” show planned for Sept. 14. The partially-clad dancers would have tested the limits of the city’s caberet license code.

“With such negative reaction from the ‘controversial’ show of the Female Review ‘Strippers’ we felt our duty to clear the air is a must,” owners Terry and Lisa Suzuki wrote in a letter to the editor. The full letter is on page A-4 of today’s News-Times.

The striptease inadvertently led to a mini-uproar after City Councilwoman Sue Karahalios questioned the city attorney about the legality of adult entertainment.

“I just questioned what parameters we had for downtown entertainment,” she said. She added that she’s pleased the bar owners and the community worked out the situation without government involvement.

In the meantime, City Attorney Phil Bleyhl researched the issue of regulating adult entertainment and briefed the council.

Both Karahalios and Councilman Paul Brewer said they don’t really want to tackle the issue, but they might have to.

“It’s a touchy issue,” Brewer said.
