Planning is under way for the 15th Annual Whidbey Island Giant Pumpkin Contest. The yearly contest features giant pumpkins, massive zucchini and other assorted enormous vegetables. It takes place each fall at Coupeville’s HarvestFest. The contest is open to all Whidbey Island residents.
Last year’s biggest pumpkin weighed more than 1,000 pounds.
Prizes are awarded for the biggest, prettiest ugliest pumpkins along with the largest pumpkin grown by a junior.
Due to generous support from the Coupeville Festival Association, free giant pumpkin seeds are available to any Whidbey Island resident who wants to join the fun. To get free seeds and information about the contest and growing giant vegetables, contact Lee Roof at 675-5687, or 360-321-6650. “Grow ‘em big!” is his motto.
