They got off to a sluggish start, but Coupeville’s volleyball team took care of business in its season opener Thursday night.

After dropping their first game 25-22 to class 2A Lakewood, the Wolves bounced back to take three straight games for a non-league victory.

Possibly displaying early season nerves, Coupeville committed six missed serves and six unforced errors in game one.

“I don’t know what that was about, but that’s OK,” head coach Toni Crebbin said. “I told them after game one, ‘OK guys, I’ll write that off to first game jitters, but from now on no excuses.’”

The team responded to Crebbin’s request.

CHS jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second game, cruising to a 25-14 victory. Games three and four were similar as the Wolves won with ease, 25-17 and 25-12.

“They were slow coming out, but they really pulled it together,” Crebbin said.

Consistency was key to the final three games, led in part by senior outside hitter Taniel Lamb.

Lamb was 17-for-17 on her attack attempts, along with eight kills and 11-for-11 serving.

“She is so consistent and she places her hits,” Crebbin said.”She can hit down the line, cross court, wherever.”

Senior Heather Fakkema was also on with her shots. The first-year varsity starter placed 25 of her 26 serves in play and had six aces.

Senior Mindy Horr added 28 assists and junior Kirsty Croghan also had a big game with 13 kills.

Coupeville has a week off before its next competition at the Lopez Island tournament on Saturday, Sept. 18. They travel to the South Whidbey tournament the following weekend, before returning to league play Thursday, Sept. 30 at Mount Vernon Christian.

Because of a realigned league that added four class B schools, the Wolves only have five more home games this year.
