It was a great way to open the season.

The Coupeville High School baseball team beat visiting Blaine 10-0 Saturday, March 14, in six innings behind a combined no-hitter and an opportunistic offense.

There were highlights all around.

Aaron Curtin pitched four innings and Aaron Trumbull two, and the senior duo held Blaine without a hit. Curtin struck out three and Trumbull four.

Their mound work was backed by two nice defensive plays. Trumbull turned in an unassisted double play in the second inning, snagging a line drive and stepping on the bag to double off a runner.

In the third, second baseman C.J. Hunter slipped behind a runner at first base on a bunt defense rotation, and catcher Cole Payne gunned him down.

The Wolves picked up eight hits on offense, three from leadoff hitter Josh Bayne and two from Curtin. Coupeville left only two runners on base and no one struck out.

Ten of the 11 Wolves who played either scored a run or rapped a base hit.

Bayne got things going with a single in the first. After advancing on a passed ball, he scored on Curtin’s base hit.

In the fourth, Smith reached on an error, stole second and scored on Curtin’s single. Another error off the bat of Trumbull put runners at the corners. Trumbull swiped second, then Kyle Bodamer drove in both runs with a single.

Bodamer eventually scored when Julian Welling’s grounder was thrown away by the Borderite third baseman.

The game ended with the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth when the Wolves added five runs.

With one out, Payne singled and pinch hitters Jonathan Thurston and Jake Hoagland followed with walks.

Consecutive singles by Hunter Smith, Bayne and C.J. Smith ended the game.

“We really played well,” coach Willie Smith said. “We had a really good approach at the plate, put the ball in play and made them make plays.

“Bayne getting on base three times really put pressure on them.”

He was pleased with how pitchers Curtin and Trumbull “hit their spots” and how “the young guys played well.”

Three freshmen and two sophomores played for the Wolves.

Coupeville (1-0) hosts Sultan (0-0) at 4 p.m. Monday, March 16.
