In the November election, only one person is running for an open seat on the Port of Coupeville Board of Commissioners.

Greenbank resident Ann McDonald is running to fill the seat to be vacated by incumbent Ed Van Patten.

Her candidacy marks the first time she has filed for an elected position.

“I think what the Port does is interesting in promoting recreation and economic development,” McDonald said.

She said one of the biggest issues facing the Port is how it will accommodate the new regulations in the Town of Coupeville’s Shoreline Management Plan. She would also like to see improvements made at the Coupeville Wharf.

McDonald is running unopposed for the vacant commissioner seat. Current commissioner Ed Van Patten decided not to file for reelection. Despite repeated attempts at contact, Van Patten couldn’t be reached for comment. Port commissioners serve six-year terms.

McDonald has lived on Whidbey Island for the past 18 years. She co-owns a construction company, Concepts Solutions, Inc., along with her husband, Mark. They have three children ages 15, 25, and 36.

She has a variety of volunteer work to her credit. She coordinated the Art Docent Program in the South Whidbey School District for five years, and she’s a Master Gardener and a member of the League of Women Voters.

McDonald is also a member of the Whidbey Island Democratic Club and she is the vice chair of the Democratic Committee for the 10th Legislative District.

She has also been busy attending the monthly Port commissioner meetings.
