Coupeville Middle School student accused of writing ‘hit list’

A 13-year-old student at the Coupeville Middle School was arrested yesterday for allegedly writing a “hit list,” according to the Coupeville Marshal’s Office.

The school contacted the Marshal’s Office at about 9:15 a.m., March 29, about allegations that the male student had written the “hit list” on his cell phone containing the names of five other middle-school students. Another student had reported the existence of the list to her parents and the parents contacted school officials.

An investigator located the list of the students’ names along with “issues” the boy had with each student, according to the Marshal’s Office.

The student admitted to investigators that it was a “hit list” but said he never intended to take action against anyone, Marshal Chris Garden said. The student said he wrote the list just to release some anger. The list contained no specific threats.

A few other students had been aware of the list, which was written at least two months ago, but didn’t tell adults or authorities about it, Garden said. They also told investigators that they didn’t believe the boy would take any action.

The parents of all the students on the list have been notified, Garden said.

The student was taken into custody and booked into the Island County Juvenile Detention Center on five counts of violation of RCW 28A,635.100, which is “intimidating any administrator, teacher, classified employee or student by threat of force or violence.” He was later released to his parents.

The cell phone was seized by police and is being held in evidence pending a search warrant for forensic examination.
