A 51-year-old Coupeville man was charged in an alleged August drinking-and-driving accident on North Whidbey that seriously injured a passenger, court documents indicate.

Prosecutors charged Philip W. Broderick in Island County Superior Court Nov. 8 with vehicular assault.

If convicted of the charge, he would face three to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range.

Broderick was driving a 1995 Lincoln south on West Beach Road early in the morning of Aug. 12 when the accident occurred. He allegedly failed to slow as he approached the T-intersection with Libbey Road and struck a fence, a gazebo and a tractor, according to a report by Detective Donald Cunningham with the Washington State Patrol.

The passenger, Denise Daggett, suffered multiple spinal fractures, a fractured rib and a fractured sternum, the report states.

Broderick told a state trooper at the scene that he had been drinking at a friend’s wedding prior to the accident, according to the report.

Broderick’s blood was drawn at the hospital about three and a half hours after the crash. The crime lab reported that his blood-alcohol content was 0.19 g/100mL, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, court documents state.
