Coupeville still had a chance to be the number-one seed into the Class 1A crossover. All that was needed was a win at Cedarcrest in the final game of the season Oct. 27.
That didn’t transpire as the Red Wolves shut down Coupeville’s offensive attack en route to a 34-8 victory.
The island Wolves finished the regular season with a 2-5 record in the Cascade League and 4-5 overall, but all is not lost.
Coupeville is still the league’s number-two seed and as of Thursday, the slate is wiped is completely clean as the playoffs begin.
On Thursday, the Wolves host Friday Harbor in a 4 p.m. game at Mickey Clark Field.
Coming off the most recent loss, coach Ron Bagby said the team will be ready to play in front of the hometown fans after two weeks on the road and hopefully get back on the winning track.
“We’re struggling a bit right now and we just never could get anything going against Cedarcrest,†Bagby said. “They are a big Class 2A and I think they have something like a 7-2 record. They are going to the Class 2A playoffs and have been playing really well.â€
Clay Hughes was held to 42 yards on 12 carries and Casey Larson netted 16 yards on eight attempts against the Red Wolves’ defense.
“That kind of tells you they shut us right down,†Bagby said. “We just couldn’t get anything going on offense and couldn’t sustain a drive.â€
Quarterback James Smith 4 for 12 for 85 yards, and hit Larson with a 52-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for Coupeville’s only score.
Bagby said the team planned on being ready for Friday Harbor.
“They are a 1A school and we think we can play with them.â€
