Andrew Mouw can’t explain it.

There’s just something about playing in an overtime period that ignites his intensity.

“I don’t know, it’s just being clutch in overtime, what can I say,” Mouw said.

For the second time this season, the Coupeville senior came up with a series of clutch overtime plays, helping the Wolves secure an 80-74 home victory over Shoreline Christian Friday night.

“I’m just overwhelmed — another overtime win, it’s great,” Mouw said, smiling.

The 6-foo-1-inch post, who provided a spark in an overtime victory against Darrington on Dec. 10, did it again Friday, scoring six of his 13 points, while grabbing five of his 16 rebounds in the extra four-minute period.

“I’m telling you what, that was great,” CHS head coach Randy King said of the performance.

Tied 69-69 with 2:45 to go, Mouw gave CHS a lead after snagging an offensive rebound and putting the ball back up and in. Over the next 30 seconds, Mouw scored four more points in the key, giving the Wolves a 75-69 advantage they would not relinquish.

“We’ve been having a not-too-great season and to get this game was incredible,” Mouw said.

The opportunity for an overtime victory wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for several key shots in the final minutes of regulation from Mouw, J.J. Marti, Blake Day and Mike Bagby.

None of those was more significant, however, than sophomore Trevor Tucker’s six-foot jumper that rattled in and tied the game, 65-65, with seven seconds left in the fourth. It was Tucker’s only made basket of the game.

“A lot of guys stepped up and made some big shots,” CHS junior Mike Bagby said.

Trailing 31-26 at halftime, Coupeville came out the aggressor to start the second half by draining its three pointers. The Wolves were 7-for-15 from behind the arc in the second half and 10-for-31 overall.

“We’d set up against that zone all week in practice and they kind of did what we expected,” King said.

The Wolves also did their job on the boards, pulling down 53 rebounds, 29 defensive and 24 offensive.

Bagby, who put in a game-high 30 points, was a key in keeping CHS in the game during the first half. He scored 26 points through three quarters, before picking up a fourth foul right before the end of the third.

“I was kind of aggressive going in, but I couldn’t do that anymore once I got my fouls,” he said.

Marti scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Day scored 17 and had a team-high four three pointers.

The win put Coupeville at 4-5 in league and 6-9 overall with five league games remaining. In order for the playoffs to become a reality, the Wolves will have to win out and hope La Conner (9-0) and Friday Harbor (8-2) struggle toward the end of the season.

“Somebody’s going to have to fall down awful bad,” King said.

Regardless if CHS is able to make a run at the playoffs or not, King is overtly pleased with the heart his team has show this year.

“Every night these kids come out and play so dog gone hard,” he said. “We may not get it done all the time, but I don’t think you can fault their effort.”

Coupeville played at Orcas Island last night and has its next game Friday, Jan. 28 at Concrete.
