The Coupeville High School girls basketball team pushed powerful Cedarcrest to the limit Tuesday, Jan. 21, before running out of gas in a 57-47 home loss.

“What a game we had last night,” Coupeville coach David King said. “We came out confident,” “played with patience,” and “stuck to the game plan on both ends of the court,” he said.

The Wolves simply “ran out of steam,” he said, in their attempt to upset the seventh-ranked 2A team.

Cedarcrest (7-1, 12-2) outscored Coupeville (3-5, 6-7) 20-11 in the fourth quarter to hold off the pesky Wolves.

Coupeville controlled the first half. In the opening quarter, it was the Makana Stone show. She tallied all of the Wolves points as they jumped to an 11-7 lead.

In the second period, Stone received some offensive help as five Wolves scored, paced by eight from Bree Messner and five from Amanda Fabrizi, and Coupeville led 30-24 at the break.

The first half was a wakeup call for the Red Wolves, and they started to control the offensive boards and rev up their fast break to get back into the game. Meanwhile, Coupeville’s offense stalled.

The combination allowed the Red Wolves to outscore Coupeville 13-6 in the third period and take a one-point lead, 37-36, into the final quarter.

“We started to lose energy and we were tired in the fourth,” King said. “This was apparent on our jump shots and free throws on the offensive end. We just couldn’t get our legs into our shots. In the first three quarters we shot 10-for-11 on our free throws. In the fourth, we went 5-for-12. Jumpers that were falling in the first half were now just missing the mark in the fourth.”

Stone connected on three field goals in the fourth quarter; Coupeville’s other five points came from the foul line. Cedarcrest countered by having four players score four or more points in the period.

King liked how his team fought to the end: “There is no quit in this team.”

He noted three players were injured but toughed it out and returned to action.

Stone was the game’s dominate player with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Messner finished with 10 points, three steals and three assists; and Fabrizi recorded seven points and three assists.

Kacie Kiel had four points, six rebounds and three assists; and Maddi Strasburg added three points.

Cedarcrest defeated Coupeville 66-27 Dec. 10.

Coupeville hosts Lakewood (4-4, 4-9) at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. The Wolves nipped the Cougars 35-31 earlier this season.
