It was worth the wait. After two rainouts to start the season, the Coupeville tennis team finally hit the courts and defeated host Friday Harbor 5-0 Friday, March 15, and visiting Lakewood 4-1 Monday.

For the Friday Harbor match, coach Ken Stange said, “We played…we won…it rained…we bought food…we ate cheesecake on the float home.”

In first singles, Amanda d’Almeida had no problems from start to finish, dumping Maddy Marinkovich 6-0, 6-0.

Allie Hanigan stopped Roxanne Bormann 7-5, 6-0 in second singles.

The doubles teams also won in straights sets starting with a 6-4, 6-2 win by Holly Craggs and Iris Ryckaert in first doubles.

Emily Gallahar and Breanna Koym took second doubles 6-4, 6-2, while Ivy Luvera and McKenzie Bailey won third doubles 6-2, 6-2.

When the JV doubles matches were stopped by rain, Jacki Ginnings and  Micky Levine led 4-3, Mary Massengale and Samantha Martin were tied 4-4 and Miranda Engle and Emily Gallahar led 4-2.

Agaisnt Lakewood, all the Wolves made an early statement by pounding their opponents in the first set of each match, according to Stange.

He said, “Amanda and Allie were particularly dominant in their opening sets. Ivy and Ana (Luvera) got to play together at No. 3 (doubles) today. They take the sister act to a whole new level with the twins thing.”

D’Almeida rolled 6-0, 6-3 in first singles.

Stange said, “Amanda is hitting the ball very hard this year, and today she hit hard despite the wind. Amanda has all the tools. She’s extremely fast and anticipates her opponent well, she hits with pace and consistency from both sides, and she has the temperament to persevere in a tough match.”

In second singles, Hanigan won 6-1, 7-5.

Stange said, “The combination of wind and oddly hit balls wreaked havoc on both players. Eventually, Allie was able to put it away when it mattered most.”

Ryckaert and Craggs captured first doubles 6-3, 6-1. The pair “shifted into high gear part way through the first set and maintained that level in the second set,” Stange said.

In second doubles, Koym and Gallaher stumbled after a good start, losing 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(9-7).

Stange said, “I hope that today’s loss will turn out to be more beneficial than a win, so to speak. Players have tendencies toward learning more about their games after a close loss. This may end up bringing them closer together as a duo.”

Third doubles was “simple domination” by the Luveras, according to Stange, as the sisters won 6-2, 6-1. “They were solid from the start,” Stange said, “and never gave their opponents a chance.”

Coupeville entertains Chimacum at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
